CASTING PLAQUES

Although I didn’t know it at the time, throughout this project I had been trying to find some way to commemorate such a unique experience. The perfect solution came when I connected with my friend David Teague from Historical Arts & Casting, Inc. David and I have known each other for a few years but had yet to work together on a project. When we met earlier this year at the BOND Custom 2024 conference, we were able to come up with the perfect solution – cast aluminum plaques for each of the six modules.

The inspiration for the design of the plaques came from the unique shape of the Future Roof Diamond Shingles and so that was where we started. After working through a few iterations, and David teaching me quite a bit about the casting process, here’s what we came up with for the final design.

Here are some videos of the process!

Forming the pattern for the mold with the CNC machine
Pouring the aluminum
Removing the formwork
A finished and polished plaque

What a great learning experience! Stay tuned for pictures of the installed plaques on the modules down in Antarctica.
